Then the main event on Saturday morning, October 27, 9:15 a.m., The 4th annual Making Waves to Wipe Out Ovarian Cancer, a 4 mile walk/run and 1 mile fun walk to raise awareness and research funding. The walk starts and ends at the World Famous Flora-Bama. Registration fee is $100 per person with 100 percent of race registration benefiting the Florida Hospital Foundation for Ovarian Cancer Research. Additional household members can register under an already registered family member for an additional $25 per person. Teams of 5 can register for just $400, and active military and families are just $25. Kids 13 to 18 years of age are just $25. Ovarian cancer survivors can register for $25 and will receive a special ribbon to be worn throughout the day in honor of their survival. We encourage you to dress-up, have fun and make this an experience you will never forget.
Our local community officials, Gulf Shores Mayor Craft, Orange Beach Mayor Kennon, Pensacola Mayor Hayward and Escambia County Commissioners have all proclaimed the last Saturday of October as Wonderful Wacky Women Day from now to eternity. Commissioner Gene Valentino will be part of our opening ceremonies, where there will be live broadcasting by Lisa Christian of Sunny 105.7.
We are also throwing a “Party Like There is No More Cancer” after the race with live music by Smokin Elvis’s. We need you to get onbaord and support our cause to wipe out ovarian cancer. Thanks to many of your donations, we have a great silent auction and bucket raffle planned with many exclusive items. Don’t miss this opportunity to bid on once in a lifetime items. All proceeds will benefit the USA Mitchell Cancer Institute in Mobile and Covenant Hospice in Pensacola.
Ovarian cancer once was called the silent killer. We speak out throughout the year, so that women and health providers know to listen for the symptoms of this deadly disease. Our ultimate goal is to save women’s lives. The following symptoms are much more likely to occur in women with ovarian cancer than women in the general population: Bloating; Pelvic or abdominal pain; Difficulty eating or feeling full quickly; Urinary symptoms (urgency or frequency).
Women should see a doctor, preferably a gynecologist, if they have these symptoms more than 12 times in the course of a month. Unfortunately, these symptoms are often missed or dismissed by women and their health care providers, leading to late diagnosis of the disease. Fewer than 20 percent of women are diagnosed in the early stages of ovarian cancer, when survival rates are highest.
The RRWWW was established as a non-profit in 2009. We began raising awareness and research funding for ovarian cancer in 2010. Because there is no early diagnostic tool, the awareness is so very important. So 100 percent of race registration fees will benefit the Florida Hospital Foundation for Ovarian Cancer. To donate, make checks payable to The Sacred Sisterhood of Wonderful Wacky Women, Redneck Riviera Chapter, INC., 14054 Waterview Drive, Pensacola, FL 32507. A Big Wonderful Wacky Thank You to our 2012 Sponsors. With your help, we are able to make a difference in the fight against ovarian cancer.
